Orlando Pirates endured a torrid 2016/ 2017 season when they got hammered 6-1 by SuperSport United under coach Muhsin Ertugral.

The unforgettable result led to the public resignation of the Turk as head coach of the Buccaneers.

Unfortunately for Bucs supporters, things went from bad to worse as they eventually suffered their worst ever PSL defeat on February 11, 2017.

Pirates travelled to Loftus Versfeld Stadium as they prepared for battle against a star-studded Mamelodi Sundowns side.

The first 20 minutes passed by rather passively, but then the Brazilians sprang to life and the floodgates soon opened.

The likes of Khama Billiat and Percy Tau combined to devastating effect to breach the Bucs defence time and again.

Ironically, Sundowns inflicted the previous worst defeat prior to that season when they crushed Pirates 6 - 1 in 1990.

While Sundowns fans were smiling all the way to the bank, Pirates fans couldn't contain their rage and things soon spilled out of control.

Ugly scenes marred the match and it had to be halted with a few minutes left on the clock.

Despite the unsavoury ending, the match will go down as Pirates' worst ever defeat in their 82-year history.

Thankfully for Bucs fans, things are looking much more promising these days, as per a previous Briefly.co.za report.

Despite a turbulent start to the season, Pirates have enjoyed a tremendous run of form under new coach Josef Zinnbauer.
