- UCT vice-chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng is doing the most for the varsity
- She even managed to sway one top matric to enrol at UCT instead of the University of Johannesburg
- Nhlakanipho Sibiya initially wanted to study towards a BCom degree at UJ before Prof Phakeng charmed him
Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng has managed to recruit bright students for the University of Cape Town.
Briefly.co.za learned Nhlakanipho Sibiya was set to go study at the University of Johannesburg until he met Prof Phakeng at his matric awards ceremony in January.
According to The Sowetan, the 18-year-old was swayed to study at UCT by the vice-chancellor after initially looking to pursue a BCom degree at UJ.
According to the vice-chancellor, after they met, Sibiya slipped into her DMs and let Phakeng know he changed his mind.
Phakeng helped him through the entire admissions process at UCT and she was there to welcome Sibiya to the university two weeks later.
Taking to Twitter, Phakeng posted a video of herself meeting Sibiya as he arrived in Cape Town.
Sibiya was not the only student Phakeng managed to win for UCT. Anelisa Shozi, who hails from Durban, was also accepted to study at UCT and she too was greeted by Prof Phakeng.
Shozi, who originally attended orientation week at Wits, was surprised by Phakeng meeting her on her arrival.
"I was not expecting to meet or even be fetched at the bus stop by the vice-chancellor herself. I felt overwhelmed," said Shozi.
