- A few hotels in SA have been recognised as the best in the world
- This is according to Forbes Travel Guide after conducting research in over 10 countries
- The hotels located in Joburg and Cape Town have made the top 2020 Star Awards list
Top South African hot spots have made it onto the Forbes list as the world's most luxurious establishments. The 2020 Star Awards celebrates an elite group of top hotels, restaurants and spas.
Forbes Travel Guide went to 16 countries, namely Antigua, the Bahamas, Cambodia, Egypt, Fiji, French Polynesia, India, Jordan, the Maldives, Mauritius, New Zealand, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, the Seychelles and South Africa to conduct their search.
The judges then check into a hotel for a minimum of two nights, posing as ordinary guests. They have a criteria of standards they look out for, including whether a staff member greets them within 30 seconds of arrival. They also judge the quality of the establishment's facilities.
Regarding hotels, South Africa had a few prestigious hotels listed. Cape Town (Delaire Graff Lodge and One&Only Cape Town) and Johannesburg (Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg and Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa) made their way onto the prestigious list.
London boasted the distinction as the city with the most Five-Star hotels - 19.
Our restaurants did not make the list. This year, 24 spas earned inaugural Five-Star achievements. Macau led the pack with five new recipients. Macau also reigned as the world’s Five-Star dining capital with such places as the Lai Heen, SW Steakhouse at Wynn Palace Macau and The 8. In the United States, California dominated with 12 Five-Star restaurants.
