- The South African Football Association (SAFA) have announced the squad for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
- The preliminary squad featured 20 overage players
- The likes of Percy Tau and Themba Zwane were included, but Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was a notable omission
SAFA have announced the preliminary squad to represent South Africa at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The bulky squad still needs to be trimmed and featured 20 overage players.
Well-known stars such as Percy Tau, Thembinkosi Lorch, Thulani Hlatswayo and Themba Zwane made the cut.
However, many would have been surprised to see the name of Itumeleng Khune excluded from the list.
The Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper has struggled to regain his number one jersey at club level, but was chosen to represent Mzansi at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The vast majority of the final squad has to be made up of under-23 players so coach David Notoane still has much thinking to do.
Via the SAFA website, Notoane said, "We have a lot of hard work ahead of us to ensure that we take only the best to represent South Africa at this big stage."
Currently, the full squad amounts to 62 players, but Briefly.co.za understands that it has to be trimmed down to 22, with four available on standby.
Nguqulo Makaula (@Mac46664) said,
"Sad how @KaizerChiefs Ngcobo & Mashiane have missed out."
Fred Mooketsi (@FredMooo) added,
"Notoane working for Sundowns hence their players a dominating the squad."
