Fikile Mbalula has reacted to a clip doing the rounds on social media of a criminal helping himself to a rail system's cabling. The Transport Minister says that the same individuals who commit these crimes would return to demand a train.
Crime is rife in a country that is battling with the pressures of economic difficulties and a high rate of unemployment.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula's attention was brought to a criminal stealing cabling, in broad daylight, from a rail system.
In response to the brazen crime, the politician had the following to say:
"It's a joke. Tomorrow the same people will be demanding a train."
Briefly.co.za reported that Mbalula had announced R1 billion has been lost over the past two years to similar crimes and vandalism.
With the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa battling to get back on its feet, theft and other crimes are hampering transformation.
While the situation is much broader than just this one incident, many people were unimpressed with Mbalula's nonchalant response to the clip.
Mbalula recently brought the nation's attention to the high figure people in his position earn and numerous people pointed out he should take action.
