South African cricket fans were optimistic of a potential T20 series victory against Australia ahead of the decider at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town.

Unfortunately, that sense of optimism was short-lived, as the Protea fire was clinically extinguished.

Eyebrows were raised when captain Quinton de Kock won the toss, but chose to field first - traditionally sides opt to bat first during day/ night encounters in Cape Town.

It was a decision that immediately backfired as Aaron Finch (55) and David Warner (57) put the South African bowlers to the sword.

A brief fightback ensued when Anrich Nortje dismissed Warner and the spin of Tabraiz Shamsi accounted for Finch.

However, some sloppy moments in the field summed up the evening for the Proteas - dropped chances and Kagiso Rabada dismissing Steve Smith, only for a no-ball to be called.

Smith went on to pull off a brilliant cameo to take his side to an imposing total of 193.

Unfortunately, things only got worse as the South African batsmen fared even worse than the bowlers.

When Mitchell Starc dismissed De Kock in the first over, there was a sense of inevitability of the outcome.

The dismal display was summed up by the fact that only two players Rassie van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen scored more than 20 runs.

With Adam Zampa returning with figures of 2 wickets for 10 runs, one would have been forgiven for thinking that Shane Warne had returned.

Zampa's spin twin Ashton Agar was just as unplayable, as he collected three wickets for 16 runs.

Eventually, the Proteas were skittled out for a paltry 96 runs.

South African supporters were frustrated by yet another disappointing performance and were brutal in their assessment via social media.

Noeleen Taylor (@Noelz_31260) said,

"When is Smith, Boucher, Charl & that Fielding coach that keeps missing the chop getting fired cos that's the problem right there."

Linley Kevin (@linleykevin22) added,

"Proteas should be banned from t20 world cup...its going to be embarrassing."

Yem-yem wakuloZondwa (@madibatingo) pulled no punches:

"Disgrace! Now let us go and be humiliated in the ODIs. Our cricket is rubbish."
