Minutes after kissing Diego Maradona, former Man United and Man City star Carlos Tevez scored a dramatic late goal to give Boca Juniors the Argentine league title on Saturday, 7 March.

The Buenos Aires club overcame Maradona’s side Gimnasia 1-0 to beat arch-rivals River Plate to the title on the last day of the season.

Going into their final round of games, River Plate led Boca Juniors by a point and could have won the title with a victory.

They could only manage a 1-1 draw away at Atletico Tucuman after coming from behind as Boca Juniors dug deep to record a 1-0 win at home to Gimnasia.

Boca got the three points they required to leapfrog their rivals when Tevez powered home from 20 meters out with 18 minutes remaining.

It was Boca’s third league title in four years and their 34th as they draw closer to River's all-time record of 36 titles with their last coming in 2014.

Tevez's goal was his ninth in 17 league games this season but the 36-year-old needed luck to stir his team to victory.

Fans at the stadium witnessed Tevez giving Maradona a kiss on the lips just before the start of the game.

And according to Tevez, he had to do that for luck as Maradona who had two spells at Boca Juniors as a player, made a return to the club as manager of Gimnasia.

"I knew I had to kiss Diego, I was lucky that way...sometimes you have to look for luck," Tevez said after the game.
