A happy mother has reunited with her child 55 years after losing him to a malicious babysitter.

Briefly.co.za learnt that Anna-Mary Barnett once headed out to work in 1965 and returned home to a life she grew to despise.

The lady, who became a mother during her teen years, was accustomed to leaving her child with family members back in the 60s whenever she had to go to work.

One day, she had to leave her child with someone she did not know too well and when she returned to pick the boy up, Barnett found out that the lady had disappeared with her child.

The mum, whose life turned into a living hell, told WLKY News that was the scariest time of her life.

Her son, Jerry Barnett, said the kidnapper abandoned him after the two moved to another state.

Jerry became a ward of the state after he was left all alone without the protection of a grown-up.

He was placed into the foster care system and was assigned a last name and a speculative birth date.

He had no papers so it was difficult to know where he came from and whose child he was.

But as fate would have it, Jerry reunited with his mum after 55 years and that was the best day of his long life.

“I was scared to get out the car. There was a mob. I thought somebody was going to kidnap me again,” the man said.

Jerry’s sad life turned him into an absent father who struggled to be present for his children.
