The CPUT courses are constantly being revamped in order to streamline their operations, this list has been compiled to reflect the most recent changes that have been implemented.
What can you study at CPUT?
The easiest way to answer this question would be to learn about the CPUT faculties. They are six in total:
- Applied Science
- Business and Management Sciences
- Education and Social Sciences
- Engineering and the Built Environment
- Health and Wellness Sciences
- Informatics and Design
Each course offered by the university is overseen by one of these governing faculties. The faculties are further divided into departments that manage courses.
Which courses are still available at CPUT?
The above faculties have been phasing out some courses and in some cases entire departments (e.g. Taxation) as they become obsolete. Most of them have been incorporated into existing courses or have been lumped together to form a new course that is more exhaustive.
The result of this is there are courses listed on their website that are available only to those who have already started on it before i.e. continuing/returning students. Our list includes only the courses that admit new students beginning from the first year. They still offer full-time and part-time studies depending on the requirements of individual courses.
The qualifications and certificates offered at the university include the following:
- Advanced Diploma
- Bachelor’s degrees
- Diplomas
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
- Higher Certificate
- Master’s degrees
- National Diplomas – these are in a separate category from the regular CPUT diploma courses
- National Professional Diploma in Education (NPDE)
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
- Certifiable short courses

How do I apply online for CPUT?
If you want to apply to study at CPUT, their process is divided into five simple steps. For online applications, they require documents to be clearly scanned and uploaded in tiff, pdf, jpg or gif format with a maximum file size of 2MB each. The documentation must also be certified, the date of certification not being older than three months.
The process demands that all applicants have a valid email address and cell phone number. All communication with regard to your application will be sent via email and/or SMS. Should you not have a valid email address you can very easily create an email account using Gmail, Yahoo Mail or any other email provider according to what makes you comfortable. Unlike manual applications that cost ZAR100, online applications are free of charge.
The process has been tested on desktop and laptop computers but is yet to be optimized for mobile phones and tablets.
Before proceeding, you should be aware that online applications are not available for the following:
- Non-South African citizens
- South African citizens with international qualifications
- Applicants with permanent residency in South Africa
- Applicants with refugee status
- Applicants with an asylum seeker permit
- Applications for RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning)

The five steps to apply online to CPUT are:
Step 1: Choose a qualification and special requirements
Go through the list of available courses and select a qualification that you would like to pursue. They released their list of 2020 qualifications for online applications. The list comes with all the available courses for every faculty, whether they are full time or part-time, as well as the campus where they are expected to be studied. You can choose a minimum of one and a maximum of three courses.
This is the point where you go through the CPUT admissions requirements leaflet or their prospectus to know the credentials required to be accepted for your dream course. You should also be aware of the recent changes to higher education in South Africa.
Step 2: Gather your documents or upload further and/or outstanding documents
Send only copies as opposed to originals. The university states that they reserve the right to verify whether the documents are authentic.
For South African citizens applying, the following is required:
- A certified copy of the first page of your Identity Document.
- A certified copy of your Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification. If you are still in Grade 12, your marks obtained in Grade 11 together with your most recent Grade 12 marks.
- A copy of the proof of payment of your application fee.
- An original Academic Record and a Certificate of Conduct, or certified copies of other certificates/ diplomas/ degrees you obtained previously from any other higher education institution.
- Any other documents specifically required for the course to which you are applying, as explained in the application form and admission requirements.
Applicants below the age of 18 should complete and send a Minor Application Declaration form.
Step 3: Get your guiding document
Get more familiar with your application by learning how to fill in the necessary information. The school's website has some guidelines on the most efficient way to go about this procedure.
Step 4: Complete your application online
This is the point where you fill in the online application form. There is a document to help you understand the process if you are struggling with it.
Step 5: Submit your application
After completing your application, you must then submit it. It gets forwarded to the faculties for consideration. You can track your application status to know how your application is progressing.
