A couple released a video on YouTube telling their romantic story of how, despite everything going wrong and a global pandemic cancelled their wedding, they still found a way to share their special day. A 'priest' with a tablet for a face waited for them.

The groom woke his fiancée up and took her outside, where the 'guests' were waiting. Cardboard cutouts, roughly drawn and shaped to resemble their loved ones, sat patiently and waited for the ceremony to start.

However, this was not where the story began.

Dan Mace contracted Covid-19 and apart from that, the lockdown made the wedding to his beautiful fiancé impossible. They had no choice but to cancel or postpone, which was probably the last thing a loving soon-to-be-married couple would want.

Briefly.co.za learned that he documented his plan to give his fiancée a perfect wedding. He worked through the night to plan the perfect surprise. He had a lot of work to do. He had to somehow create a priest, an altar, a band, a ring bearer, guests and a just married sign. On top of all that he had to somehow surprise, Gabi, his fiancée.

The rings:

He made the rings out of guitar strings, as they both love music and each other.

An altar:

In this case it was more of a flimsy wooden structure with fairy lights but it served its purpose.

The band:

Was a wood cut out carrying a guitar in front of a wooden box decorated as a keyboard which hid the speaker.

The guests:

Around 13 or so 'guests' were 'invited' or in this case created out of cardboard and wood cutouts. They were dressed up and each given their special character.

Just married sign:

He made an enormous "Just Married" sign using an old carpet and spray paint.

The last thing to do was surprise Gabi.

He arranged for his friends and family to 'attend' through a Zoom conference which was broadcast through the 'priest's head' and got his friend to officiate the wedding.

Flash forward to the morning and yes, Gabi was surprised by the event, she was blown away. They had five hours to prepare for their special day. Gabi got dressed while Dan slept - he was exhausted after pulling an all-nighter.

She wore a beautiful floral dress, Dan wore jeans and a baseball cap. His friend read some lines from a Rowan Atkinson movie.

They draped the massive carpet over the roof of their house, telling the world their great news.

It was an amazing gesture, even if not official it helped ease the pain and disappointment of having to cancel their wedding.
