5 Charles Maja memories: Getting to know the late actor & legend

The late Mzansi actor Charles Maja was a man of many talents with a heart of pure gold. Here are five glimpses of the man he was at heart, giving insight into his character.

Charles Maja, aka Big Boy, sadly passed away last week at the age of ripe age of 53, leaving many with gaping holes in their hearts.

Briefly.co.za learnt that Maja was not only an actor and a mentor, he was also a dedicated father, an advocate for sobriety, a tailor and so much more.

It is amazing how different someone’s on-screen character can be from who they really are, and more often than not, we only get to know the real person once they are gone.

Maja’s passing came as a shock to many. There was not a single aspect of his life that he did not put 110% into, and it shows through the impact he has left on so many.

The highly respected actor and Skeem Saam. His legacy is undeniable and his memory will endure.

In honour of the great legend, we get to know that real Maja through some touching memories and facts told by his daughter Molagare, as reported by SowetanLIVE.

Dedicated Father

Maja had three children, Mahlatse, 27, Molagare, 25, and Mapula, 23, whom he loved dearly. Not only was he a phenomenal father in real life, but on screen too.

Both his real-life daughter Molagare and on-screen son Thabo Mkhabela expressed what a great role model and pillar of strength he was.

He was also an exceptional grandfather of two, Sheila and Malesela.

Always Sober

While Maja may have played the role of an alcoholic and played it exceptionally well, in real-life he never touched a drop of alcohol.

Maja was a sober man who believed in the power of sobriety.

His daughter told stories of how he used to come home pretending like he had been drinking, just some of the many humorous moments their family will miss.

Tailor Maja

Molagare explained that even though her father was known for acting, that was not all he was great at.

Maja had a knack for fashion. He designed clothing for his family for special events – he even dabbled in furniture design.

He Could Sing

Another entertainment talent Maja had was singing. Inspired by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Maja formed a choir group of his peers called Kopermyn City.

Radio came before TV

Maja also played many roles in Thobela FM radio dramas before he became a TV star - noticeably as Bra Tick in Mahlakung.

Maja will forever be remembered for his role as Big Boy in Skeem Saam, a role he loved and executed with great pride. He touched many souls and his memory will forever live on.
