TV host and singer Kelly Clarkson could not hold her tears when she heard the story of four-year-old Willa Gray Akins' adoption.
Thomas Rhett and his wife, Lauren Akins, appeared on the at-home edition of The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday.
The couple told Kelly about the gruelling process they went through when they adopted their daughter, Willa.
Lauren, whose mom was also adopted, said the full-on adoption conversation happened after she travelled to Uganda in 2016 and met a baby girl.
Lauren then spoke to Rhett via FaceTime because she felt she had to give the child her "forever home".
Rhett also recalled talking to his wife after a concert and just knowing they had to bring the child home.
E! News quoted Lauren as saying:
"I was, like, so moved. I mean, the second I touched her, it was, like, electric. This little girl has just taken my heart. I was like, 'Honey, we've gotta find her her forever home. Like, I know that's why I'm here is to get this girl to her home'."
As Kelly listened to the story, she started to cry, according to E! News.
She said while wiping away a tear:
"Oh my God. OK. You totally Oprah'ed me just now. I did my own make-up and this is not waterproof."
Kelly further said:
"It's so beautiful because I know that feeling. As a mama, you touch them and you hug them. It doesn't matter if it's yours or not. We're a blended family. You're like, this is my purpose. It's such a powerful thing."
The couple said the adoption process wasn't easy. Lauren and Rhett spent months filing documents, travelling to Africa and taking all of the required steps.
Then, in 2017, Lauren reportedly announced she was pregnant. She had to travel to Uganda near her third trimester hoping to bring Willa home. However, the adoption wasn't finalized before she had to head back to the U.S. for a pregnancy check-up.
Lauren's mother and father ended up bringing Willa to Nashville, US. Just a few months after Willa's arrival, Lauren gave birth to a baby girl named Ada James Akins, now two. The couple has also welcomed another baby, Lennon Love Akins, in February.
