Meet Ghanaian lady who sits on Facebook’s new Oversight Board

Ghanaian lady by name Afia Asantewaa Asare-Kyei has become one of the three Africans who have been appointed to join Facebook's newly created Oversight Board.

A report by Thebftonline.com indicates that the said Oversight Board was instituted to review certain content decisions by Facebook and Instagram and make binding decisions based on respect for freedom of expression and human rights.

Afia Asantewaa Asare-Kyei's appointment happened on 7 March, 2020, which made the whole Ghana very proud of her.

The other two African's Afia has joined on the 20-member Oversight Board include, Julie Owono, a digital rights advocate and Executive Director of Internet Sans Frontières from Cameroon.

The other person is called Maina Kiai who is a human rights activist and Director of Human Rights Watch’s Global Alliances and Partnerships program from Kenya.

Afia Asantewaa Asare-Kyei herself is a human rights lawyer and Program Manager at the Open Society Initiative for West Africa from Ghana, Senegal and South Africa.

Speaking about her new role, the Ghanaian lady mentions that the very act of creating the Board shows Facebook has taken the criticism levelled against it seriously and hoped her membership can help address some of the criticisms.
