- Virgil van Dijk has been named Premier League's best defender in history
- The Dutchman joined Southampton in 2015 and three years later moved to Anfield
- The defender has already helped Liverpool win their first Champions League title in over a decade
- Man City legend Vincent Kompany believes Van Dijk has done enough to be named best defender in the EPL
Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany has named Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk as Premier League's best defender in history.
The Dutchman joined the Reds from Southampton in a five-year deal valued around €845 million in January 2018.
Briefly.co.za learnt that in just one and a half seasons down the lane, he has already helped them win their first Champions League title in 11 years.
The centre-back has also been instrumental to their first Premier League title chase in over 30 years as they currently sit 25 points gap ahead of the defending champions with just nine games to end the season.
And the Belgian believes Van Dijk has already overtaken both John Terry and Rio Ferdinand in terms of achievement in the EPL as reported by Daily Mail.
"I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk," Kompany told SPORF.
"It's a weird one because he hasn't been on the scene as long as these names we have mentioned: John Terry, Rio Ferdinand. These guys were there for a long time.
"But the signs he has showed in his last few years just make it so obvious that if he would have been at the top level before that he would have already gone further as well.
"From what I've seen in terms of having an impact on a team, and a defender is never about himself it's about communication with other guys and how you make your team more solid.
"The Liverpool before Van Dijk and the one after him, it's a completely different setup and I'll give him that one because of that."
Chelsea icon Terry made more than 700 club appearances and won 17 trophies at Stamford Bridge, while Ferdinand made 680 club appearances, winning 18 trophies with Manchester United.
Kompany won four Premier League titles and was among the first Premier League team to win the domestic treble in England, but he feels Van Dijk is already the best of the bunch.
It was earlier reported that Virgil Van Dijk who plays for Premier League side Liverpool have named Barcelona star Lionel Messi as the toughest opponent he has faced in his career.
No doubt, Lionel Messi is one of the best forwards in the world considering his high sense of scoring goals and even all the titles he has won so far since he joined Barcelona.
Virgil Van Dijk, on the other hand, is arguably the best defender in the world considering how he has been able to stand tall in Liverpool defence since he joined from Southampton.
