American media personality Oprah personally called murder victim Ahmaud Arbery’s mother to console and reassure her. He was senselessly shot and killed in February.
On Ahmaud’s 26th birthday, the talk show host surprised Wanda Cooper Jones with a bunch of gifts accompanied by a heartfelt phone call.
She wished the young man a happy birthday and held a lengthy conversation with his surprised mum.
According to TMZ, Wanda’s "heart was in her mouth" when she was told Oprah was on the phone and wanted to talk to her.
She was unsure how the philanthropist got hold of her contact details but was eternally grateful for the kind gesture.
To her, it was one of the best things that had happened in a while and she will forever cherish the golden moment.
Wanda said the wealthy celebrity was thinking of Ahmaud and was still saddened by his brutal murder.
The TV icon, who has also ventured into acting, hoped the deceased would get justice and the perpetrators behind his untimely death would face the full wrath of the law.
She was glad prime suspects Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael were finally arrested after uproar by people on social media.
Wanda admitted Oprah sent her something via mail but declined to divulge any more details about the special gift.
Oprah told her she walked with friends in honour of Ahmaud’s memory after celebrities and other social media users did the same.
Ahmaud died after being shot twice in the chest on February 23, 2020 while jogging in his neighbourhood.
He was accosted by a father and son who had parked their car by the roadside waiting for him to approach them.
A fourth party who was slowly driving behind the 25-year-old recorded the whole thing and the video was later leaked to the public.
The McMichaels first told the police they suspected Ahmaud was a burglar before the video surfaced.
