- Zinedine Zidane was branded the most technically gifted player of his time
- The Frenchman build a reputation for himself during his time at Real Madrid
- Former England star Michael Owen said he thought the midfielder was 'God'
Former England star Michael Owen has labelled former Real Madrid teammate Zinedine Zidane as the most technically gifted player od their era.
The 40-year-old joined Los Blancos from Liverpool in the 2004-05 season and played alongside the Frenchman at the Santiago Bernabeu for the rest of that campaign.
Zidane was highly revered at the Spanish club because he had already won the World Cup and the Champions League. Zidane clearly made a lasting impression on Owen.
"Zinedine Zidane was technically the most gifted player," Owen said on BBC podcast Savage Social. "He was almost born to have the ball at his feet.
"Even when he ran the ball was constantly the same distance away from him. Every touch - left foot, right foot - everything he did was just so natural.
"The ball was almost a by-product. If he did a move the ball just went with him. He was so silky and so talented."
Briefly.co.za learned that Owen failed to win silverware during his reign at the Bernabeu despite the array of stars available at the club back then.
It was during that period that Los Blancos had the likes of Roberto Carlos, Luis Figo, and England captain David Beckham in their side.
The Englishman believes De Lima has passed his prime when he joined him at Madrid, though was 'still banging in the goals'. But of all the stars, for Owen, Zidane stood out firmly head and shoulders above the rest.
"He was big, strong and if he did a turn he had a real burst of pace," he added. "Vision and goalscoring as well. He was just a brilliant player.
"Probably the one who when I joined Real Madrid I couldn't stop watching in training. I just thought he was God in many ways."
Italian League giants Juventus appears to have reignited their quest of signing Real Madrid current manager Zinedine Zidane.
Juventus made attempts to lure their former player back to Turin as a replacement for Max Allegri but the Frenchman decided to rejoin Los Blancos after one year away from them.
Zidane rose to the top of best managers in the world after winning the Champions League title three consecutive times (2015-2018).
