- Maimane has slammed the Department of Basic Education for seemingly delivering one water tank to a primary school
- This is a 'Mabena move', said the former DA leader
- Twitter users were left divided after Maimane's question
Former DA leader Mmusi Maimane has a called the delivery of one water tank to a school a "Mabena" move. Mabena is South African pop culture reference to someone who keeps failing at their job.
As Grade 7 and 12 learners are set to start school again on Monday, the Department of Education has been busy trying to ensure that everything is place for the reopening. There has been delivery of personal protective equipment (PPE) across the country.
Spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education, Elijah Mhlanga, posted several pictures on his Twitter account of the department delivering water tanks to various schools.
In most of his pictures, the schools are primary schools in Limpopo. In one of the pictures, only one water tank is seen being delivered to a primary school.
The leader of newly-formed One South Africa Movement (OSA) Maimane asked Elijah about the water tanks. He said:
"So all the students will use one tap? This is a Mabena move."
Mhlanga did not respond to Maimane's questions but Twitter users offered their different opinions after Maimane posed the question. Some said Maimane was criticising but not doing anything, others defended him.
South Africans have grown fond of post-DA Maimane, who they feel was not able to express himself with the opposition party.
