On this Throwback Thursday, Briefly.co.za pays tribute to legendary striker Katlego ‘Mahoota’ Mashego. Although he is largely underrated, his achievements speak volumes.
When football followers speak about legendary South Africans strikers, it's highly unlikely that Katlego ‘Mahoota’ Mashego's name would be mentioned.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns forward remains highly underrated, but he's enjoyed a glittering career that spanned two decades.
Although born and raised in Bushbuckridge, Mashego started his senior career at Hellenic FC in Cape Town.
Hellenic would be the first of many top flight clubs as Mashego became one of the game's true journeymen.
In total, the striker featured for a staggering eight PSL clubs over his playing career.
Incredibly, he is also one of the few players who managed to score for every club he played for.
During the 2012/ 2013 season, Mashego finished as the top goalscorer with 13 goals for Moroka Swallows.
The signing was a true coup for Swallows, as they signed him as a free agent from Golden Arrows.
The illustrious list of clubs he featured for included Hellenic, SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates.
Mashego also featured for Bafana Bafana on 22 occasions, scoring twice.
In total, the veteran striker amassed a total of 73 goals in over 240 matches in the PSL.
Despite his relative obscurity compared to other star strikers, Mashego boasts a cabinet with nine trophies, which includes five league titles.
On a previous Throwback Thursday edition, Briefly.co.za remembered the former Orlando Pirates ace Josephy Kamwendo.
The Malawian international had an eye for goal.
