SpongeBob SquarePants, a popular children's cartoon character on Nickelodeon has been reintroduced as gay to mark Pride Month across the world.
Briefly.co.za learnt that the character whose sexuality has always remained ambiguous came out in a tweet shared by Nickelodeon.
The channel described the showrunner as an ally of the LGBTQ community and dressed it in a pair of rainbow coloured shorts.
Some social media users predicted that Squidward too, a character from the show was either gay or bisexual thanks to his behaviour.
Other favourites featured in the tweet were Korra from Legend of Korra and Schwoz Schwartz who acts in Henry Danger.
Korra was confirmed as gay or bisexual in a previous episode and her orientation has always been public knowledge since then.
Schwoz, on the other hand, is a transgender man in real life who transitioned from womanhood many years back.
Behind the three was a rainbow background which is often used to celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ community.
It is said Stephen Hillenburg, the brains behind the cartoon previously strongly denied allegations that SpongeBob was indeed into fellow men.
