Tupac Shakur is known worldwide as one of the best rappers to ever make it in the game. On 16 June the star would have turned 49 years old. Even though he died at just 25 on 13 September, 1996, his music still lives on.
In celebration of the late rapper and actor's birthday, Briefly.co.za takes a look at five cool facts about his life.
1. Real name
Tupac Amaru Shakur was born Lesane Parish Crooks on 16 June, 1971 in New York City, US.
2. Debut album
He released his debut album titled 2Pacalypse Now in 1991. By this time, Tupac had become a central figure in the West Coast hip-hop scene. He introduced social issues with his lyrics at a time when gangsta rap was dominant in the mainstream.
3. Best selling album
His double-disc album titled All Eyez on Me became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America. He released the project in 1996.
4. Music sales
2Pac is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide. In 2002, he was inducted into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
5. Acting career
Tupac also had a great acting career. He starred as Bishop in Juice in 1992. He portrayed the character of Lucky in Poetic Justice in 1993. 'Pac played the part of Ezekiel in Gridlock'd in 1997 and Jake in Gang Related, also in 1997.
USA Today reports that Snoop Dogg described Tupac as a "gangster" when he took the stage at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony to pay tribute to his late friend.
"When I sat down to gather my thoughts about my labelmate, my homie, my brother, there's one thought I kept coming back to: That Tupac was an actual human being. While everyone now thinks of him as some thugged-out superhero."
"(He was) strong and vulnerable, hardheaded and intellectual, revolutionary and - oh yeah, don’t get it [messed] up - gangsta."
