Ghanaian creative and social entrepreneur, Makafui Awuku, is the genius creative behind McKingtorch Africa.
McKingtorch Africa is a social enterprise that turns plastic waste into useful art pieces and other products.
The young Ghanaian creative and his team at McKingtorch Africa have successfully developed beautiful sandals from plastic waste, otherwise known as pure water bags.
The team turns shredded LDPE and HDPE plastic waste into leather-like materials and then into art.
McKingtorch Africa found innovative ways to make use of pure water bags that have littered Ghana's capital city Accra.
Myjoyonline.com reports that through a waste recovery project, households and individuals are able to separate other waste from plastic bags and sell it to them.
The team at McKingtorch Africa then shreds the waste, and through a smokeless process under temperatures of more than 300 degrees, turns the material into a sheet to produce sandals.
McKingtorch Africa plans to roll out a waste Buy-Back programme to urge households and people to separate waste from pure water bags in exchange for money.
According to myjoyonline.com, Mckingtorch Africa plans to make more than 5,000 pairs of these sandals in the next 12 months.
The team intends to recover seven tons of plastic waste bags through the project.
Some of the products made from plastic waste includes their simplest designs of sandals made from 16 pieces of one inch squares of recycled single-use plastic bags in it.
The footwear comes in different designs with both localised and foreign names including Sankofa, Borlaife, Duafe, Joy, and Freedom, among others.
