John Haslett has taken to Facebook to praise his wife, Catherine Haarhoff Haslett, on the #ImStaying group. He calls her his "beautiful wife and Hero".

She is an internal medicine specialist and has been working tirelessly with the scant resources at her disposal to help those in her care.

Briefly.co.za learned that he recalls a specific case where she was able to save a couple in their 30's who were almost put on a ventilator but her quick thinking saved the couple from a risky treatment. Many who go onto ventilators do not recover.

Here is his full post:

"My beautiful wife and Hero. She is an internal medicine specialist and for those that don’t know this means she is pretty much as frontline as it gets in saving lives during the pandemic.
She is also 20 weeks pregnant with our daughter and been nauseous pretty much every day for the last 14 weeks. When she is not wrapped head to toe in PPE trying to treat a swelling number of patients coming through the doors at a government hospital in KZN, she is up at 3 am trying to find beds for these patients or watching seminars to get more info on how best to treat each person with the VERY VERY limited resources we have.
Never felt this helpless, having to watch your whole world go every day to fight an invisible enemy like this. She is my HERO and I am staying because she is fighting so hard to save the people of this land at great personal risk.
Just this week she saved a young couple in their 30s that were in such a poor condition from COVID that others wanted to ventilate which if you know your stats on the disease, the likelihood of survival is slim to none on ventilation. She suggested Airvo as an alternative and both have since recovered and the husband has gone home while his wife is doing much better."
