Malik Basit, founding member of The Roots, has passed away. This is according to a statement that was released by the group on Wednesday evening. The performer was 47 years old.
Malik B, as he was popularly known, was part of the American rap group The Roots from its early beginnings to about 1999. In a statement on their verified Twitter account, The Roots posted:
"We regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and long-time Roots member Malik Abdul Basit. May he be remembered for his devotion to Islam and innovation as one of the most gifted MCs of all time. We ask that you please respect his family in our time of mourning."
No cause of death was released.
Although Malik left the group in the 90s, he did feature in a few songs with them afterwards. On The Roots' seventh studio album, Game Theory, released in August 2006, Malik B returned to the group. He appeared on three tracks and the songs with the group were billed as "featuring Malik B".
In the album liner notes, The Roots thanked Malik B, adding the statement: "Welcome home".
The late rapper's recent work includes a collaboration album with New York-based producer Mr Green and being a featured member of the Philadelphia rap collective Beard Gang, which includes fellow Philadelphia artist Freeway.
Tributes from social media users artists have poured in. Twitter user MAXXJEROME said:
"My prayers and condolences to family, friends and love ones!"
"The movement just lost another king. Sincere condolences to you all. RIP Malik B. Hip hop family stand for this brother of the culture tonight. Utterly soul-destroying."
"RIP to Malik B. He’ll always be remembered as an instrumental piece of hip hop history. Stay strong!"

In other sad news of a celeb passing away, Briefly.co.za previously reported on popular Glee star Naya Rivera's tragic death. She had gone missing from a rented boat while out on a lake, seemingly just a day out.
Her four-year-old son was later discovered alone on the boat after a search was started when they had not returned to shore later in the day, 8 July. He had been found wearing a life-jacket, however hers was still on the craft.
Some days later on 13 July her body was found and it appeared that the 33-year-old Naya had drowned.
