Anthony Akumu biography

From Rachuonyo, Teddy grew up in the village of ‘Nigeria’ deep inside the rough Kenyan ghetto, Mathare in Nairobi. He is the fourth born in a family of five boys. He stayed with his two brothers, the eldest being Onyango, who was the sole provider for the family. This is because when their mother retired, she chose to go back to Rachuonyo while the boys opted to remain in Nairobi.

The brothers lived in a dilapidated iron-sheet single-room house in this most dreaded area of Mathare. Unfortunately, Onyango died in 2013 after a short illness, and so Anthony was left with his younger brother, Omondi.

Education

Anthony went to the Mathare Primary School in the Nairobi slum until 2005. After that, between 2006 and 2009 he studied at the Maina Wanjigi Secondary School also in Nairobi.

Growing up in the slums, Anthony used to train with his friends without proper kits while using non-standard balls made out of plastic bags. He earned the nickname, Teddy (after the Manchester United legend, Teddy Sheringham), due to the amazing Anthony Akumu skills he showed on the field. He was playing number 10 for junior side Lacosto under coach Dickens Omondi.

From Lacosto, Anthony joined Heidi Sport, which used to compete in the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) zonal leagues. His brother Onyango kept tabs of his academic progress, while coach James Omondi ensured that Akumu never missed training. Teddy's determination and hard work eventually landed him a trip to Norway in 2004 as part of the MYSA Under-12 team.

In December 2009, Teddy joined the Kenyan club of his dreams, Gor Mahia (K’Ogalo), after a successful three-week trial. This trial was immediately after his high school when the club’s recruitment policy was focused on the youth. Signed by Coach Gideon Ochieng, the player did not flourish under him but managed to solidify his position under the next manager, Zedekiah Otieno, who joined in 2010.

Everyone noticed the brilliance of his skills, which is why Danish SuperLiga club, Randers F.C. came for him in December 2010 for a two-week trial. Unfortunately, that did not work out, and he did not sign a contract despite senior players at the club inquiring about him. Despite that, the Rander FC officials still had positive things to say about the tall midfielder.

After his time at Gor, Anthony was signed on a six-month loan deal by Sudanese side Al-Khartoum in June 2014. The loan was a success, so the club signed him permanently in September 2014 on a long-term contract and went on to make several appearances.
