The songwriter showed many aspiring musicians that they don't need to win a big singing competition in order to make it in the cut-throat music industry.

The multi-award winning songstress is celebrating her 26th birthday this Friday, 2 October. Shekhinah used her "rose gold" voice to win the hearts of many South African music lovers and to pave a way for herself in the entertainment industry. 1. Real name and date of birth

The Please Mr hitmaker's real name is Shekhinah Thandi Donnell. She is popularly known by her stage name Shekhinah. She was born in Pietermaritzburg, in KZN, on 2 October, 1994.

2. Idols SA exits

Shekhinah was among the Top 32 of the singing competition's Season 7 in 2011 when she exited the show. She was among the Top 6 of Season 8 in 2012. Even though she failed to win the music competition twice, she won the hearts of many Mzansi peeps with her sweet and angelic voice.

3. Major label signing

After collaborating with Mzansi artists such as the likes of Kyle Deutsch and DJ Sliqe, Shekhinah signed to Sony Music Entertainment in February 2017. At the time of her signing, she had proved that she was a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.

4. Debut album

Shekhinah dropped her debut studio album titled Rose Gold on 6 October, 2017. The album released by Sony received raving reviews from music lovers and critics from across the continent of Africa. The 12-track album had hits such as Suited, The Sound and Thirsty.

5. Awards

Shekhinah's Rose Gold album has won many prestigious awards. Through the album, Shekhinah won Newcomer of the Year, Album of the Year and Female Artist of the Year at the 2018 South African Music Awards. She also won Best Female Artist in Southern Africa and Songwriter of the Year at the All Africa Music Awards in 2018. The star bagged the Best Pop & Alternative award at the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2016 for a song she did with Kyle Deutsch.
