Tumisho Masha is starring in a new film. The actor took to social media to post the trailer for the new horror film from Paramount Pictures, Spell. Masha captioned the teaser with "Coming soon" and some spooky emojis to keep with the theme of the film's scheduled release on Halloween.
Masha is starring opposite some heavyweights, with Omari Hardwick and Loretta Devine leading the cast list. The storyline follows Omari as a father who survives a plane crash, but grows increasingly suspicious of the elderly couple nursing him back to health with their ancient remedies.
The trailer showed Tumisho in his character, a sheriff, and tweeps were quick to spot the snippet and offer their thoughts.
The horror film genre has always been popular with fans of the scary and gory, but is also gaining traction in its telling of political and topical stories. Jordan Peele's Get Out was nominated for a host of awards when it was first released and South African tales have been making moves too, in the form of The Tokoloshe and 8 on Netflix.
There is also excitement as the film will add to the new ranks of horror movies lead by a black director and a predominantly black cast, hopefully pointing to signs that Hollywood's movie industry is committed to telling diverse stories across genres.
Tumisho's role in the film is credited as "Sheriff" on IMDB.com and has fans keen to see what his purpose in the storyline will be. The spooky trailer involved some witchcraft and dark magic, so fans took to the comments to voice their excitement for our local actor:
@RangaClara: "Can't wait to hear your American southern accent"
@Neo1580z9: "Congratulations my brother. Great to see you working with big stars in film industry. From Mams to Hollywood."
@FabulouslyLulu1: "I see you there. Can't wait to watch."
In other movie-related news, Briefly.co.za recently reported on Thando 'Thabooty' Thabethe's new role in a Netflix special being announced. The star is starring in South Africa's first Netflix Christmas special which is entitled, How to Ruin Christmas: The Wedding.
The three-part special will follow Thabethe and Busisiwe Lurayi as sisters who are spending Dezemba holidays with their family as well as having Christmas celebrations and a wedding too. The story will follow the shenanigans that ensue and give viewers the classic aspects of a Christmas tale set against the backdrop of a South African setting.
The project is helmed by the Rhamapakela siblings, who had their first Netflix offering, Seriously Single, released earlier in 2020.
