Benjani Mwaruwari biography

Benjani was born on August 13, 1978, to Malawian parents. As of October 2020, the retired football player is 42 years old. His father Amos Mwaruwari passed away in 2015. He is married to Thembi, and the couple has four children. The footballer began his career at Young Blood and later joined Highlanders Football Club juniors. Some of the teams he played for during his career include Lulu Rovers Football Club and Air Zimbabwe Jets.

Benjani got his big break when he signed for Jomo Cosmos of South Africa. However, he did not play long for the team, as he made a move to join Grasshoppers Zurich in Switzerland. Henceforth, the star played for many other clubs around Europe, including Auxerre.

He also had an outstanding career with the Zimbabwe national soccer team known as the Warriors. On 25 September 2002, Benjani became the first Zimbabwean to score a goal in the UEFA Champions League. Mwaruwari has a very impressive international career with the Warriors scoring goals.

While at Auxerre, Benjani scored the opening goal in the 2005 Coupe de France final. On 5 January 2006, English Premier League club Portsmouth signed him from Auxerre for £4.1 million after Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger recommended the player to Harry Redknapp.

While at Portsmouth, the legend scored his first hat-trick in a 7-4 win. This broke the record for the most number of goals scored in a Premier League match. Benjani Mwaruwari celebration styles were unique. He pointed three times left to the right, in which he was addressing himself and the fans.

On 5th February 2008, Benjani transferred to Manchester City for a two and a half year deal. Benjani Mwaruwari salary was reported at £50,000 a week. The goal was against his former club Portsmouth on 20th April 2008. His next goal came in the 3-2 home loss against Fulham. On 27th August, he signed a one-year deal with Blackburn, and he had an option of a further year at Ewood Park.

On 30th October, the player scored the first goal, a glancing header, in Blackburn's home game to Chelsea in the 21st minute. He is the third Zimbabwean to play in the Premier League after goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar, who played for Liverpool and Peter Ndlovu, who played for Coventry City and Sheffield United, amongst others. He retired from international football on 11th October 2010, following Zimbabwe's 0–0 draw with Cape Verde.
