A controversial businessman, Mark Lifman, has been allegedly accused of bribing the police and interfering with the case against suspected underworld kingpin Nafiz Modack.
On Wednesday Bruce Hendricks, the lawyer for Colin Booysen, made these claims in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.
"There is outside influence by Mr Lifman... What I gather from this is that he's in control of the police," Hendricks said.
The court had learned that Lifman was part of a rival faction which was in opposition to Modak and Booysen. Modack has been accused of extortion and intimidation along with Booysen. Colin Booysen is the brother of alleged Sexy Boys gang boss Jerome Booysen.
The Sexy Boys face charges in connection to the security industry which services nightclubs. They allegedly took over the security operations at clubs and restaurants, forcing them to pay them a protection fee.
