- John Steenhuisen being elected as the leader of the DA, naturally, caught the attention of numerous politicians
- EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi threw shade, calling for the opposition leader to educate himself
- This prompted a snarky rebuttal from DA Chief Whip Natasha Mazzone who slammed him as an 'ice boy'
The Democratic Alliance has chosen veteran politician John Steenhuisen as its new leader.
This drew heavy criticism from Economic Freedom Fighters Member of Parliament Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, who zoomed in on Steenhuisen's education.
This has often been used against the man, whose claim to fame was arguable as former leader Mmusi Maimane's Chief Whip.
Ndlozi insisted that Steenhuisen's election was due to 'white male privilege' and called on him to educate himself:
"Baas John is 44-years-old. He's been a DA politician for over 15 years. All this time he never saw the need to study because whites think merely being white makes you clever, a natural leader and naturally educated! Baas John's election is the best instance of white male privilege!"
Steenhuisen's Chief Whip Natasha Mazzone's response to this assessment of her leader wasted no time in assessing Ndlozi's own political career:
"Can you imagine how sad Dr Quinton Ndlozi is, that no matter what he ever does, how hard he ever tries, he will never be his party's leader, but always the guy who gets ice for his leader's drink? It's sad actually."
While Ndlozi opted to ignore Mazzone's comments, fellow Red Beret Leigh Mathys came to his defence:
"I can’t imagine how sad you must be that you don’t get the point he makes on patriarchal benefits, in particular, white male privilege - a social ill worldwide and flourishing in the DA. How does ‘serving ice’ (or not) even compare?"
Earlier, Briefly.co.za reported that Steenhuisen became the butt of all jokes on social media after it was revealed he had no post-matric qualifications.
The revelation followed the DA proposing that a university degree should be compulsory for the position of Chief Whip.
Since the news broke, South Africans took to social media to share their two cents on his lack of qualifications and soon #SteenhuisenGoToSchool started to trend on Twitter.
Needless to say, the EFF, who prides themselves on being educated, took the lead on throwing shade at the DA's chief whip.
EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu wrote: "So @jsteenhuisen doesn’t have a degree or diploma or certificate in anything? His shallowness explains the whole thing."
The People's Bae also took shots at Steenhuisen on several occasion on Sunday. While referring to a 53-year-old gogo, who recently passed matric, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi told the DA chief whip it is never too late.
"#Steenhuisen can do well to see that it’s never, ever too late @jsteenhuisen #SteenhuisenGoToSchool," Ndlozi wrote after he retweeted an article about the grandma.
