The Council of the University of South Africa (Unisa) has appointed its first female vice-chancellor since it's establishment 148 years ago. Professor Puleng LenkaBula will take on her position as Principal and Vice-Chancellor with effect from 1 January 2021.
Prof LenkaBula's appointment was approved during a special sitting of the Unisa Council which happened yesterday, 5 November. Prof LenkaBula was unanimously chosen after a rigorous selection process.
Prof LenkaBula, who is currently the Vice-Rector: Institutional Change, Student Affairs and Community Engagement at the University of the Free State (UFS), held the vice-rector position at the UFS, she was also the Dean of Students at WITS University.
According to a statement on the Unisa website, Prof LenkaBula is an internationally revered scholar who has been published widely. Social media users have taken to Twitter to share congratulatory messages for Prof LenkaBula.

In similar news, Briefly.co.za recently reported on Sekedi Mabatha, University of Limpopo's first female SRC head. Mabatha is the first female to take on this position since the University's establishment in 1959.
The 22-year-old's new position was announced in a virtual introduction. Mabatha is a BSc Agricultural Economics Honours student at the university and comes from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Student Command rank.
According to the University's Twitter, Mabatha has an additional assigned portfolio to handle Mass Communications and Publicity.
She will lead seven members from different student structures as a Transitional SRC. Speaking about her position, Mabatha said she was grateful for this new opportunity where she will now be able to make a difference in the lives of many people.
