- An inspirational recent graduate took the #ImStaying group on Facebook to share her amazing story
- Sonia Mathibe had no money when she registered with UNISA back in 2016 and was working as a casual employee at a retail store
- She got a permanent position and used most of her money to pay for her fees and she has now signed up for her Honours
A recent graduate shared her amazing story of working hard in order to follow her dreams. Sonia Mama-Phenyo Mathibe registered with UNISA back in 2016 and at the time she was a casual worker at a retail store.
She worked for a maximum of four days a week. She applied for NSAFAS and although she was approved, Sonia said they did not pay for anything. Thankfully, she managed to secure a permanent position at the store with a basic salary.
Sonia used her first paycheque to pay her fees and saved some for transport. She was never able to afford a laptop for her assignments and instead borrowed her neighbour's. Sonia is a single mother and her own mother, who is a pensioner, helped her where she could.

"Today I am the first graduate at home, I have registered for my Honours for the next year even though I have no plan on how I am going to pay for it. God will pull through I have applied for two bursaries.
"I am staying because my background didn't determine my future. I am staying because, despite the little pay I earned that I had to help at home with and also had to support my daughter as I am a single mother. I made sacrifices that I'd rather not have a social life but focus on my academic life. #ImStaying."
Sonia received a ton of love and positivity from Stayers.

In other news about graduates, Briefly.co.za recently reported on a proud graduate who thanked his single dad with a heartfelt appreciation post. In the post, which was shared with ImStaying, he shared pictures of himself and his dad, who looked after him alone since he was a child, on the day of his graduation.
"I just wanna take this moment and tell the world that even with the help of one parent you can still make it. I'm grateful to God for my dad's life. He has been so supportive ever since. Today I managed to make him the happiest father ever. For that, I'm staying," he wrote in the Facebook post.
Facebookers were truly moved by the heartwarming appreciation post and headed to the comment section to both congratulate the young man and commend the proud dad on raising his son so well despite the many challenges that come with parenthood.
