- The Provincial Minister for Education in the Western Cape Debbie Schäfer has created fury online due to her response to the incidents at Brackenfell High School
- Various allegations of racism have been made against the school recently but Minister Schäfer has seemingly shrugged it off
- South African tweeps took to Twitter to call Debbie out as many are concerned about whether or not the matter is being taken seriously
Debbie Schäfer, the Provincial Minister (MEC) for Education in the Western Cape, is being called out on Twitter for her controversial response to the incidents at Brackenfell High School. Replying to a tweep, Debbie responded in a way that has infuriated many South Africans.
@stoephel tweeted that condemning violence is good and that racism should be classified as violence on its own. The tweep went on to speak about Debbie's statement that was released yesterday seemingly defending the privately-organised matric function at the school.
Her response to @stoephel read: "So if you have a private party and invite one race only that is racial discrimination?"
Take a look at the tweet and Debbie's response below:
Part of Debbie's statement on Brackenfell High School read:
"Whatever one’s views may be, the fact is that the event in question was privately organised, at a private venue, by private individuals. The school had nothing to do with the organisation or management of that event. It was not supported, funded or endorsed by the school in any way."
Take a look at some of the responses from Saffa tweeps:
"I cannot believe you are a whole MEC for Education for the WC and this is your thought on the subject matter. We have a long way to go."
"You're incompetent and unfit to sit in the office of the MEC of Education. You're tone-deaf and that is so on-brand with your whiteness and the party you represent."
"How did you become the MEC of Education mara?"
Briefly.co.za has been covering the Brackenfell High School incidents for the past few days. According to allegations, there have been no black teachers at Brackenfell High School in nearly a decade. To add to this, a matric ball was privately organised and only attended by white pupils.
A clip of parents storming towards protesting EFF members at the school was shared online yesterday. In the clip, the angry parents are using vulgar language to try and persuade the protestors to abandon their protests.
Not long into the clip, a fight breaks out between a parent and one of the protestors, resulting in a brief moment of chaos. The EFF and parents from the school have now vowed to return to the school.
