- The petition to have him recast was posted on Change.org and already amassed over 170 000 signatures at the time of publication
Johnny Depp's fans have rallied around him and started a petition to get him back into the third instalment of the Fantastic Beasts movie franchise.
Depp announced earlier this month that he had been asked to resign from his role in the Harry Potter spin-off movies after a lawsuit he filed was dismissed by the British High Court. The case involved Depp's ex-wife, Amber Heard, and the UK publication The Daily Sun.
The actor's fans and supporters have taken to wielding their online power to get Depp back into the Fantastic Beasts film and started a petition on Change.org in an attempt to do so.
The petition itself is aptly titled, "Warner Bros, Bring Johnny Depp back as Gellert Grindelwald!!!'. Warner Brothers owns the studio with the rights to the Harry Potter film franchise and, by extension, the Fantastic Beasts movies. 'Gellert Grindelwald' is the character played by Depp in the first two instalments and the one from which he was asked to resign.
The petition's aims, as written by its administrator, include:
"Johnny Depp was asked by Warner Bros to resign and leave his role of Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts 3 movie. This happened because of the verdict of his case with 'The Sun' tabloid that was completely unfair. We want him back! Warner Bros should listen to the public or we will boycott the movie!!!"
The verdict in the case comes as an added aspect to the drama surrounding exes Depp and Heard, who have been in litigation since 2017. As reported in the Daily Mail, the trials and accusations have been well-publicised. Depp's fans have become increasingly outraged that Heard has not had the same repercussions to her career that Depp has had to endure.
In previous and more positive Harry Potter-related news, Briefly.co.za reported on Rupert Grint, the actor who portrays Ron Weasley in the films, finally joining Instagram and posting a photo of his new baby girl.
Harry Potter fans around the world were ecstatic to hear that yet another Weasley has joined the party. Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films, has finally made himself an Instagram account.
As if that wasn't enough, an honorary Weasley was announced as Rupert introduced the millions of Potter fans to his and actress Georgia Groome's baby daughter, Wednesday G. Grint. Wednesday's birth was announced by publicists back in May but this is the first shot that fans, and now followers, have seen of the little one.
Speaking of followers, Rupert's account amassed more than a million followers in its first few hours of being created. He's already passed the two million mark and with the popularity of the Potter franchise, is likely to gain even more by the weekend.
Rupert joins other Hogwarts alumni on the social media platform. Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley, Matthew Lewis, who played Neville Longbottom, and the Phelps twins, who characterised Fred and George Weasley, all have Instagram accounts. Tom Felton commented on the photo:
"Welcome Weasley, it’s about time. Love to Wednesday."
Emma Watson is the most notable of the list, having used her platform to promote gender equality in her activism work through organisations UN Women and HeForShe.
Of the three main characters in the franchise, both Emma and now Rupert have accounts on the picture-sharing platform, which leaves just Harry Potter himself. Actor Daniel Radcliffe remains the last to hold out on joining the world of social media.
