- Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films, has set a new record after joining Instagram
- The Guinness World Records announced that the actor had beaten the record for fastest time to reach one million followers on Instagram
- Rupert managed to hit the one million followers mark only 241 minutes after his Instagram account was first created
Rupert Grint rose to international stardom when he was just a kid. The actor was cast in the film versions of the wildly popular Harry Potter book series as a main character called "Ron Weasley."
Despite the franchise having come to an end years ago, the popularity of the stories has not waned. Rupert recently joined Instagram and managed to break and set a record while doing so.
The Guinness World Records announced that when Rupert joined the social media app, he managed to smash the record for "fastest time to reach one million followers on Instagram".
Rupert created his account, @rupertgrint, and amassed a million followers just 241 minutes later. That means it took four hours and one minute for one million people to follow the actor on Instagram.
The previous record-holder was beloved nature conservationist Sir David Attenborough, who took four hours and 44 minutes to achieve the feat.
Briefly.co.za reported on the story when Rupert first joined Instagram and introduced his little girl to the world.
Harry Potter fans around the world were ecstatic to hear that yet another Weasley has joined the party. Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films, has finally made himself an Instagram account.
As if that wasn't enough, an honorary Weasley was announced as Rupert introduced the millions of Potter fans to his and actress Georgia Groome's baby daughter, Wednesday G Grint. Wednesday's birth was announced by publicists back in May but this is the first shot that fans, and now followers, have seen of the little one.
Speaking of followers, Rupert's account amassed more than a million followers in its first few hours of being created. He's already passed the two million mark and with the popularity of the Potter franchise, is likely to gain even more by the weekend.
Rupert joins other Hogwarts alumni on the social media platform. Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley, Matthew Lewis, who played Neville Longbottom, and the Phelps twins, who characterised Fred and George Weasley, all have Instagram accounts. Tom Felton commented on the photo:
"Welcome Weasley, it’s about time. Love to Wednesday."
Emma Watson is the most notable of the list, having used her platform to promote gender equality in her activism work through organisations UN Women and HeForShe.
Of the three main characters in the franchise, both Emma and now Rupert have accounts on the picture-sharing platform, which leaves just Harry Potter himself. Actor Daniel Radcliffe remains the last to hold out on joining the world of social media.
