Bushiri couple released following 'illegal' arrest in Malawi

Controversial religious leaders Shepherd and Mary Bushiri have reportedly been released from police custody in Malawi. The fugitive couple handed themselves over to authorities in their home country on Wednesday.

The Bushiris reportedly also applied for bail at the Lilongwe Magistrate's Court in Malawi. According to a Facebook post by the self-proclaimed prophet, the magistrate ordered that the couple should be released unconditionally as their arrest had been 'illegal'.

Bushiri's post continued on to say that the magistrate also ruled that whenever there is a case against the couple, they should appear before the court after being summoned and not by arrest.

Briefly.co.za previously reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa has spoken out about the ongoing Bushiri drama. According to reports, Ramaphosa has referred to the Bushiris' ever-growing media coverage as "concerning".

Shepherd and his wife Mary have been under the watchful eyes of dozens of media publications ever since the news that they had managed to defraud some of the congregation members of the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church of hundreds and thousands of rands.

According to eNCA, Ramaphosa is also expecting a report on their escape following the Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi's explanation on the couple and their five passports each. SA had this to say about Ramaphosa's "concern":
