Unathi has had to defend herself after a fan slammed her for refusing to pose for a picture with her. The reason behind Unathi's refusal was the fact that the fan was not wearing a mask.
Her stance led to the fan, who calls herself @zuvahabane, labeling her as rude. According to Zuva, she met Unathi at The Maslow Hotel Sandton, where she requested a photo. Things got unpleasant when Unathi decided to stick to Covid-19 reguluations.
Addressing the issue on social media, Unathi apologised to Zuva but stood by her decision. She posted:
"Things have changed and they have changed forever and we will all react differently because of our personal journeys and responsibilities."
"I am noticing an increased tension building with people I have never met who want to engage with me and get offended if I decline when they are not wearing masks in public places. This is the New norm and it is going to be like this for a while."
Unathi comes from the Eastern Cape, where Covid-19 has ravaged many parts of the province.
"As I speak I must return there tomorrow to bury my gran. My friends are losing their parents, siblings and colleagues and this is hitting all of us HARD."
She went on to say that she would rather be called rude instead of putting her children's lives in danger,
"If you’re NOT wearing a mask.......don’t expect ANYTHING from ME."
Her followers seemed to understand her decision and fully supported her stance. Instagram user
"2020 the gift that keeps on giving...grown women beefing over a selfie"
"You actually don’t owe anyone who wants to endanger your life, an explanation. Especially someone who doesn’t value their own life. ESPECIALLY for a selfie. I can’t believe, people are willing to die for a selfie & then still feel you OWE them decency for risking your life. The sheer audacity!"
"Masks are no different to condoms - 2 people decide what risks they are both prepared to take with their health, and if one person doesn’t consent then that’s their respected choice. Simple."
Meanwhile, Briefly.co.za previously reported that Unathi simply cannot believe that her boy is already so grown. Taking to social media, the singer penned a sweet post to celebrate her son’s 16th birthday.
She shared a picture of herself hugging the young man along with the caption:
“Sixteen years ago we stared into each others eyes for the very first time and didn’t blink once.
"I remember when we met like it was just yesterday. Today you are 16 and I’m so honoured to be your mom. You are my everything. As you created our family saying ‘I love you up to God.’ Happy birthday my one and only son."
