Simon Louis gave his best friend, Mary Emmanuelle, the gift of life and once she woke up he asked her if she would share the rest of her life with him as his wife.

Mary gently rejected Simon’s marriage proposal because she said her health situation made the future uncertain.

The best friends met in London more than 20 years ago and have over the years at times engaged in friendly flirting and the odd kiss, but according to Mary, the relationship has evolved into a deep friendship rather than a romantic one over the years.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Mary collapsed at home and spent two weeks in a coma. This was when she was diagnosed with kidney disease which had progressed to its final stages.

Simon went to visit her daily and sometimes stayed the night. Her chances of finding a suitable donor took a blow when doctors realised she had the very rare type B-negative blood.

Eventually, Simon decided to take a chance to see if he was a match for Mary, the results came back positive and the pair underwent the surgery.

This was when Simon decided to pop the big question. He admits to being very disappointed and a little shocked when Mary rejected his marriage proposal.

“I offered her my heart but I had to settle for giving her my kidney. Whatever happens, I’ll never regret giving her the gift of life.”

Mary said “He is my very best friend and always will be. The love between us is real. He could have died doing what he did for me.”
