Pearl Thusi took to social media to film an instalment of her Instagram live series, Pearls of Wisdom. The actress opened herself up to answering questions and chatting to her followers.

The Queen Sono star spoke on a number of topics but the one that caught most people's attention was when she was asked by a follower about the #MenAreTrash hashtag, which has remained prominent on social media for the last four years.

Pearl said that her opinion of it was that not all men are trash but that there are pressures that society puts on people which lead to unrealistic expectations.

Pearl's opinion was that she thought the focus should be shifted to positive behaviour. She was quoted by All4Women as saying:

“Let’s treat men, specifically South African men, with positivity, if we’re going to keep highlighting all the s***y things they do, then they will continue doing those things. Because we don’t make noise when they do good things, and we need to take responsibility for that.”

Pearl continued by joking that she thought it would be better to treat men like pets as she said:

“Treat them [men] like pets. Reward them for good behaviour and acknowledge when they do right!”
