The Thabo Mbeki Foundation has welcomed the African National Congress’ (ANC) decision to recall President Jacob Zuma from office. The foundation said Zuma’s recall was long overdue.
The foundation said recalling Zuma would allow the ruling party to focus on some of the many challenges it currently faces which have in large part been caused by Zuma’s 10 years as leader of the ANC.
In a statement, the foundation said that many people wanted Zuma out of office because he faces prosecution on 783 charges of corruption.
Briefly.co.za gathered that the foundation believes the interests of the ANC and the country would be best served if Zuma were no longer president of the country.
The foundation’s statement reads in part: “We, therefore, welcome the decision announced today by the National Executive Committee of the governing party‚ the ANC‚ to recall Mr Zuma as a deployee of the ANC in his capacity as President of the Republic.”
A spokesperson for the foundation Thami Ntenteni said Zuma should as a loyal cadre of the ANC respect the decision of the ruling party and tender his resignation.
He said Zuma needed to communicate his intentions with the Speaker of the National Assembly as a matter of urgency.
South African’s have expressed their shock and anger at Zuma’s apparent defiance to resign from office. One man said he could not understand why Zuma did not comply with the ANC in the same way that Thabo Mbeki did 10-years ago.
