- A transgender woman has become the first in the world to breastfeed her baby
- She was born a man
- She underwent hormone therapy to enlarge her breasts and produce milk
A transgender woman has become the fist in the world to successfully breastfeed her baby after undergoing hormone therapy.
Briefly.co.za learned that the 30-year-old unnamed woman was born a man. She exclusively breastfed her baby for six weeks.
She then went on to breastfeed while also using formula until her baby was six months old.
According to Daily Mail, this is the first documented case of a transgender woman producing enough milk to sustain a baby.
Although the woman has not undergone gender reassignment surgery, she has been on hormone therapy for several years. This fully developed her breasts.
Specialists at the New York-based Mount Sinai Centre for Transgender Medicine and Surgery recorded the case in the Transgender Health journal.

They said the woman approached them after her partner fell pregnant:
She explained that her partner was pregnant but not interested in breastfeeding, and that she hoped to take on the role of being the primary food source for her infant.
One of the specialists, Dr Tamar Reisman, said:
Hypothetically there is nothing stopping men from breastfeeding – the ability is inherently there.
