South Africans, in fact, all Africans, have been waiting for the release of Marvel's latest movie, Black Panther, featuring a black African superhero and set in part in a fantastical futuristic African nation which people are hailing as an example of how African might be today if colonialism hadn't disrupted the progress of African civilisation. looks at some of the amazing outfits and comments shared by fans on social media after having gone to see the movie, which hit screens in South Africa on the same day as SONA2018, Friday, 16 February, 2018.

While some people had to choose between the political events and the movie's opening, many still managed to get to both in the weekend the movie opened in South African cinemas.

People took to twitter to comment about how proud they were of the South African talent featured in the film's cast and soundtrack.

John Kani was celebrated by some fans as a "national treasure".

And Babes Wodumo, who featured on the soundtrack, was also a great source of conversation on twitter threads showing people in cosplay to celebrate the film's opening.
