The Sowetan claims to have documents proving that the meeting took place. Mashaba has lashed out at the publication and said he would be willing to prove his innocence in court.

Briefly.co.za gathers that Mashaba is adamant that the City of Johannesburg and Lephatsi Financial Services are not and have not engaged in any business dealings.

Mashaba said it was sad that journalists felt the need to abuse their power, he said it was obvious that in this instance the journalist was working for the African National Congress (ANC) who are desperate to remove him from office.

If the allegations proves true, it would be a gross breach of conflict of interest.

Mashaba said the director of Lephali had delivered services to the city at no-cost and that he had been transparent about the nature of these services.

“The city is not paying him a cent to do this work for us. It’s not something I did in darkness, I operated this officially, I informed all my coalition partners of the decision,” he said.
