Doctor who doubted herself shares story of failure and success

- Dr Lerato Madike shared her amazing story with Mzansi and revealed that she had never thought that someone with background could become a doctor

Dr Lerato Madike took to the Facebook group #ImStaying to share her story of how she left school, never believing that someone of her background could ever become a doctor.

Yet, at the age of 29, she has had an incredible experience, a journey where she went from strength to strength.

She matriculated in 2008 and pursued a diploma in Biotechnology, then went on to graduate Cum Laude with a Bachelor Degree in Technology.

She didn't stop there and completed a Master's Degree. Taking things further she travelled to America where she attended the Colorado State University to complete her studies in Bioengineering and Material Engineering.

Finally, she completed her PhD in just 20 months and has published articles and presented research at local and international conferences.

A truly amazing woman.

However, she had been full of doubt at first and confessed that there is nothing special about herself and that she had failed more than she had succeeded on her journey.

Her vision of what she wanted had kept her going.

"My name is Lerato Nellvecia Madike, I am 29yrs old and I am a Doctor. I went to Namakgale Primary school and completed my high school studies at Sebalamakgolo High school with three distinctions in Life sciences, Afrikaans and Sepedi in 2008. I graduated for my National Diploma in Biotechnology in 2012 then later proceeded with my studies to complete a Bachelor of Technology and graduated Cum laude in 2016 from the Vaal University of Technology. I graduated Cum laude for my Masters degree in 2018 and obtained the Vice Chancellor Award for top achiever in the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences. I started my doctoral studies in 2018 and later proceeded to Colorado State University in the United States of America to complete my research in the field of Bioengineering and Material Engineering. I completed my PhD in a period of 20 months at the age of 28. I have five publications in DHET accredited journal and I have presented my research at local and international conferences."

Earlier, Briefly.co.za reported that Dr Nompumelelo Shange and Dr Roderick Juba are a power couple and a force to be reckoned with. The couple received their PhD degrees on the same day and both were in the Faculty of AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University.

Dr Juba received his in Conservation Ecology while Dr Shange received her degree in Food Sciences. Dr Shange and Dr Juba are from Inanda and Humansdorp respectively. The couple met in 2010 and started dating in 2016.

Dr Shange and Dr Juba got married in September last year during a traditional wedding in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal.
