- Wigan Athletic beat Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup 5th Round
- The loss means Man City will not complete the quadruple (winning the Premier League, Champions League and both domestic cup competitions) this year
- Will Grigg scored the winning goal in the 78th minute of the match
Third tier side Wigan Athletic completed yet another upset victory over football giants Manchester City on Monday night.
Wigan completed a 1-0 victory of Pep Guardiola’s men to end any dreams the team and its fans had of winning the FA Cup and completing the quadruple this season.
Wigan’s star player Will Grigg scored the one and only goal of the match in the 78th minute, by doing so he has undoubtedly written himself into the history books yet again.
Briefly.co.za gathered that this is not the first time Wigan has broken Man City hearts. The team stunned the same opposition during the final of the FA Cup five years ago with a stunning 1-0 victory.
Man City did themselves no favours when Fabian Delph was sent off the field for an illegal challenge on Max Power just before half-time. Guardiola was unimpressed by the decision and a confronted his Wigan counterpart, Paul Cook, on the way to the changing rooms at the break.
Wigan did an amazing job of shutting down play at the back throughout the match, Grigg did not make a mistake when Man City finally made a defensive error late in the game.
Wigan have made a habit of beating Premier League sides in this year’s FA Cup, the third tier side has already beaten West Ham United and Bournemouth.
The team will face will face Southampton on the weekend of 17-18 March and will be fancying a repeat of their FA Cup triumph five years ago.
