Unemployment is a big problem in South Africa. While it mostly affects young people, a student has shown that older people are equally affected.
Briefly.co.za learned that the student, who uses @Thisismlu98 as his username on Twitter, appealed for help in finding his dad a job.
He took to Twitter and said his dad has been unemployed for six years despite having qualifications and experience.
@Thisismlu98 accompanied his appeal with a photo of himself and his dad in the background. He wrote:
Hey guys. This is my father. He's been unemployed for 6 years, but he is qualified up to the T.
He has a Masters Degree in Sociology with 10+ years work experience but he's really struggling to find a job. Please RT, His employer might be in your TL. Thank you.
His tweet went viral, garnering over 11,000 retweets and 4,000 likes. Some responders offered some helpful suggestions. See some of them below.
In subsequent tweets, @Thisismlu98 said his dad was retrenched in 2012 and has been unemployed since then.
The young man studies civil engineering at Mangoshuthu University of Technology in Durban.
