President Cyril Ramaphosa held a very serious family meeting with Mzansi during which he issued an immediate ban on the sale of alcohol as infections spiked.

Ramaphosa said that the nation was now 'paying the price' for behaviour over the festive season that has seen over 50 000 new infections over the past few days alone.

Social gatherings, the consumption of alcohol and failure to follow non-pharmaceutical protocols were highlighted as the major drivers of the wave.

During his speech, a clip was recorded of a mask-less party. In the background of the party a TV set is seen on which Ramaphosa is making his announcement on the liquor ban.

This resulted in the video going viral and capturing the attention of the authorities, who swooped in on Monday night and arrested the tavern owner for contravention of the Disaster Management Act.

Gauteng's Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela issued a statement regarding the incident:

"In Mamelodi, police in the evening [Monday 28 December 2020] dispersed patrons at a tavern and arrested the owner for contravention of the Disaster Management Act", the statement reads.

This has resulted in authorities clamping down on venues and parties which have ignored the Covid-19 restrictions.

In other news, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Monday this week about updated Covid-19 regulations in the country. A visibly emotional Ramaphosa announced that SA would be moving to Level 3 lockdown. Leanne Manas recently took to her Twitter page to share her thoughts on the address.

"I have never seen a president cry or show this much emotion during an address. He is literally begging us to take care.
"Please please South Africa look after yourselves and those around you. We need to take responsibility for our own actions now! #level3 #Covid19SA," wrote Manas in the sombre tweet.
