Year in review: Senzo Meyiwa murder case makes headlines again

Senzo Meyiwa was murdered tragically in 2014 and the authorities could never really solve the case back then. The case was revisited in 2020 and the South African Police Service (SAPS) seemed to have made more progress.

Senzo Meyiwa was a professional soccer player and played for Orlando Pirates as well as Bafana Bafana. He was shot dead in Vosloorus at the home of his then-girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo. Briefly.co.za takes a look at how the Senzo Meyiwa case unfolded in 2020.

1. Police uncovered the firearm used to end his life

SAPS made progress when they made a major breakthrough in finding the murder weapon used to kill Senzo Meyiwa.

According to a report by News24, a senior police official involved in the case explained that the firearm and the identity of the man accused of pulling the trigger were crucial to the investigations and signalled his hope that this would help solve the "complex" case.

2. A hitman claimed that Kelly Khumalo was responsible

Kelly Khumalo could not catch a break as the case made it back into the headlines and this claim made it worse. A hitman was questioned and he blamed Kelly Khumalo for Senzo's death. Despite so many people being present on that fateful day including Kelly's mother, sister and friends, no one can solve the mystery surrounding what truly happened.

3. Senzo Meyiwa's family wants to help one of the murder accused

Meyiwa's family believed that one of the men who was a suspect in the case of Senzo's murder is innocent. They even went as far as wanting to assist him. Senzo's brother, Sfiso Meyiwa said that the family believes that the men charged for the murder are actually innocent.

Sinqobile Maphisa, the sister of one of the suspects, claimed that her brother is innocent and is facing alleged torture in prison.

Briefly.co.za previously reported that a key witness reportedly died due to poisoning in the Senzo Meyiwa case. A recent report said that a key witness in the murder case of Senzo Meyiwa has died due to being poisoned.

According to the report, Thabang Makeleni was poisoned late last year shortly after he made a deposition to new investigators that linked five suspects to the case.
