The charges, being drunk in public in police uniform, were pressed against the man after a video of the ordeal went viral.

One of the people gathered around the allegedly drunk and mostly passed out officer claims in the video that the cop is sleeping right 'in front of the police station'.

A separate clip the officer, now lucid, can be seen struggling to speak while seated behind a bench in public. He later falls over.

The authorities say that the officer is stationed at Randfontein and had been off-duty on Friday when he was found under the influence.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters commented that an internal probe is currently underway to investigate the man's 'improper conduct':

“The regrettable incident happened near Toekomsrus satellite police station and police were alerted by members of the public."

The province's police Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has also weighed in on the matter, condemning the behaviour and not only improper but 'disgraceful' and 'detrimental to the image of the SAPS':

“And this during a time when the organisation is working hard to restore public confidence and trust in the service. A criminal case has also been opened against the member and he has been charged with being drunk in public in police uniform, and subsequently released on a J534, admission of guilt, fine."
