Covid19 update: Hospital probed after patient filmed crying for help

A Durban hospital facing overcrowding with Covid-19 patients and high rates of absenteeism by staff members is being looked into after pictures of patients lying on the floor and a film of a woman crying for help was shared online.

In the clip, the woman can be heard begging for help also stating that she was experiencing difficulties breathing. In the clip, other patients are also sleeping in chairs and left unattended while no help comes for them.

1. Minister in the Presidency, Jackson Mthemu, test positive for Covid-19

SA Minister, Jackson Mthembu has reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus. The official Presidency page took to its Twitter to share the news with the country explaining that the Minister took the test on Monday this week after experiencing symptoms of the virus.

2. South Africa records 1.25m cases of Covid-19

The number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 now stands at a staggering 1.25 million. There have been 416 new deaths recorded for the 12th of January 2021.

This brings the total number of lives lost to the virus up to 33 579 here in South Africa. Meanwhile, 6 897 people have recovered from the virus today bringing the total number of Covid-19 recoveries in SA up to 973K.

The young man recently took to his Twitter page to share the sad news of his dad's passing due to Covid-19. According to the post, his dad was a doctor who worked on the frontline and had tested positive for the virus but continued to work helping save many other lives.

"My dad was a frontline doctor who had been in hospital for close to two weeks after testing positive for Covid. He left this earth this morning. After doing what he loved for many years. Death is painful. I’m numb. RIP Dr MH Mapela," he wrote sadly.
