It was the curiosity of a small four-year-old boy that alerted the volunteers at the Edith Benson Children's Home in Durban of a fire which ended up engulfing the entire building.
Board member of the home, Kerusha Govender says that as soon as the boy alerted the adults they immediately began to evacuate the children.
Govender says that thanks to the well-trained staff the children are safe. They were relocated the day after the fire to four separate facilities.
Thembeka Mbhele of the SAPS says that they are investigating the cause of the fire and have not ruled arson out.
"For now, the cause of the fire is still unknown and being investigated," said Mbhele.
The children's home cares for kids from birth to five. The children have been either abandoned, orphaned, abused or neglected.
